The Cay - Indiana Repertory Theatre
Music, music, every where,
nor any drop to drink.
The Cay is a theatre for young audience piece centered on two characters lost at sea and then marooned on an island in the Caribbean. The director was interested in the idea of everything being repurposed; our raft and then island were constructed of the flotsam and jetsam of the shipwreck described in the story. The challenge for sound was to recreate the vast natural environment at sea and land solely through music and musical instruments. The themes you hear in the slideshow were representative of the sun and its reflection glinting off the water, nighttime, a hurricane, a shipwreck, and more. Sound effects created from musical instruments include the third character in the show, Stew Cat, who “meowed” through bent notes bowed on a violin.
